BLOOM is a three part series from Los Angeles based artist Maggie West. Images in the collection were created using a custom time lapse photography process developed by the artist.
Since 2020, West has photographed hundreds of plants and flowers growing under a spectrum of colored lights. Her unique time lapse process allows her to capture the plant’s natural movement while using colored light to alter the visual properties of each plant. All color effects are done with lighting, rather than in post production.
After filming each sequence, West combines her time lapse footage into surreal digital landscapes that grow and evolve before the viewer’s eyes. These intricate floral landscapes utilize the plants natural movement and blur the land between documentation and fantasy.
