Frost

FROST is an immersive installation by Maggie West that transforms time lapse photography of real plants into luminous winter landscapes. The project was made possible with support from Amazon Web Services and debuted with a VIP opening reception hosted by The Cultivist. Following the private opening, FROST expanded into a public weekend event in partnership with Expression, transforming the space into a vibrant gathering where art, music, and community came together around the work.

Floral Snowstorm

FROST is created through West’s custom time lapse photography process, in which real plants are filmed as they bloom, shift, and open under carefully controlled lighting. Blossoms such as magnolias, chrysanthemums, and almond flowers are illuminated with cool blue and white tones so that their natural motion begins to resemble drifting snow, frost, and winter atmosphere. By capturing thousands of still frames over time, West transforms these subtle botanical movements into expansive winter landscapes.

Rather than constructing the scenes with 3D animation or artificial imagery, the environments in FROST are built entirely from real footage of plants in motion. Each element is photographed individually and later combined to form layered digital compositions that feel both natural and surreal. The result is a frozen world created from living botanical material, where the delicate movements of real flowers become the visual language of winter.

IMMERSIVE INSTALLATION

FROST was presented at SV Studios in Los Angeles, a venue known for its large scale digital display systems and immersive LED environments. The space allowed the work to be experienced at a monumental scale, surrounding visitors with moving winter landscapes composed from West’s botanical time lapse footage. The clarity and brightness of the screens brought out the fine detail of the plants as they bloomed, drifted, and transformed into frozen environments.

The architecture of SV Studios made it possible for viewers to move through the installation and experience the work from multiple perspectives. The combination of high resolution LED technology and a darkened interior created a vivid atmosphere where the glowing imagery became the primary source of light in the room. Within this setting, FROST unfolded as an immersive environment that invited audiences to step inside a winter world constructed from living botanical motion.

Alongside the digital installation, West created a physical scenic environment designed to echo the imagery within the work. Sculptural elements, materials, and atmospheric lighting were arranged to reflect the icy palette and botanical forms seen in the video, allowing the space itself to feel like an extension of the frozen landscape on screen. This physical installation served as a counterpart to the digital imagery, grounding the luminous winter scenes in a tangible environment that visitors could move through and experience in person.

Private Opening Event

The exhibition opened with a private VIP reception presented by Amazon Web Services and hosted by The Cultivist, a global arts organization known for producing exclusive, high end cultural events for collectors and patrons of the arts. The evening brought together a curated guest list that merged figures from the worlds of contemporary art and technology, creating a setting where creative and industry leaders could experience the installation together. Guests were invited to view the work in an intimate environment before the public opening, allowing the installation to be experienced as both an artwork and a social gathering.

The event was designed as a luxury experience that reflected the visual language of the exhibition. A custom menu and cocktails were created for the evening, while floral arrangements were carefully designed to echo the cool tones and botanical forms seen in the work itself. The result was an immersive environment where every detail of the evening, from the décor to the atmosphere of the room, extended the aesthetic of FROST and created a refined setting for the installation’s debut.

Public Pop-Up Weekend

Following the private opening, FROST expanded into a lively public event produced in partnership with Expression, a Los Angeles based creative collective known for organizing vibrant cultural gatherings. The evening transformed the installation into a celebratory atmosphere with music by Things You Say and friends, drawing a diverse crowd of visitors who came to experience the work together. Guests moved through the glowing winter landscapes while music filled the space, creating a festive environment where art, music, and community came together around the installation.

The event was free and open to the public, reflecting West’s strong belief that immersive art should be accessible to everyone rather than limited to private audiences. The following day, the exhibition reopened for a more relaxed afternoon matinee that welcomed a broader audience, including families and younger visitors. Together, the public celebrations allowed the work to reach a wide range of people and created an inclusive environment where the installation could be experienced by the larger community.
