Oasis - LA

Inspired by the diverse nature of plant life found in gardens, Maggie West will debut OASIS, a new immersive video artwork that presents a luminous desert garden environment. Blue agave, cactus, and sculptural succulents emerge from darkness in West’s signature visual style, where richly saturated color and carefully composed botanical imagery transform natural forms into a dreamlike cinematic landscape.

The new work will premiere at SV Studios in Los Angeles, where it will be introduced with a luxury opening dinner held within the immersive environment. Guests will gather among the projected desert garden as the space is transformed into an atmospheric setting for an intimate evening of dining, bringing together art, hospitality, and design within West’s cinematic botanical landscape.

The Garden

The concept for OASIS was inspired by the remarkable diversity of plant life found in gardens. Across cultures and environments, gardens bring together a wide range of plants, textures, and colors, carefully arranged to create spaces that feel both cultivated and alive. From flowering plants and sculptural foliage to resilient desert species such as agave and cactus, these environments reveal how different forms of plant life can coexist in compositions that are both visually striking and calming.

Gardens are spaces that can be enjoyed by people from many different backgrounds. Whether in expansive public parks, shared courtyards, or small home gardens, the act of combining plants to shape a peaceful environment creates places that feel both personal and communal. This shared appreciation for gardens and their ability to transform everyday surroundings into something beautiful became a guiding inspiration for the work.

Gardens are also compelling because of the layered mixture of plant life that appears within them. Many plants are intentionally placed by gardeners such as potted cacti, flowering ornamentals, and carefully selected foliage. At the same time, native species often find their way into the same spaces on their own, sprouting unexpectedly in planters, cracks, and soil beds. This blend of intention and spontaneity creates gardens that feel alive and evolving, where cultivated beauty and natural growth coexist in a way that is both organic and visually rich.

Night Scene

For OASIS, West will create an immersive landscape composed from carefully staged photographs and time lapse botanical footage. Individual plants will be filmed and photographed in the studio and then layered together to construct a dreamlike moonlit garden environment. Through this process West transforms real plant material into a cinematic scene that feels both natural and slightly surreal, allowing viewers to experience a garden that could exist somewhere between memory and imagination.

The composition evokes the quiet magic of nighttime in a garden, a moment when the atmosphere becomes calm and reflective. It is a place where someone might sit alone and observe the subtle movements of nature or share a drink with friends under the night sky. The scene will be illuminated in deep blues, teals, and violet tones that echo moonlight and evening shadows. Within this luminous environment, plants such as agave, flowering cacti, succulents, daisies, and other garden species emerge from the darkness, creating a layered botanical landscape that feels serene, intimate, and alive.

Connecting with Nature

West’s process begins with photographing and filming real plant material in the studio. Individual flowers, succulents, and botanical elements are carefully arranged and captured using high resolution photography and time lapse techniques that document subtle movements such as blooming, unfurling leaves, and slow shifts in form. These elements are then composed together to build immersive environments that feel both lush and cinematic. Colored lighting plays an important role in the process, bathing the plants in saturated hues that transform familiar natural forms into luminous landscapes

At a time when much immersive visual work is dominated by fully computer generated imagery and artificial intelligence, West’s approach remains grounded in the physical world. Rather than generating plants digitally, she works directly with living material and records their natural behaviors through the camera. The resulting footage preserves the organic complexity of real plants growing, opening, and responding to light. By combining these real botanical moments into large scale compositions, West creates immersive scenes that feel simultaneously dreamlike and authentic, rooted in the quiet beauty of nature itself.

SV Studios

OASIS will be presented at SV Studios, a venue known for its state of the art LED technology and advanced digital presentation capabilities. The space allows the work to be displayed at a monumental scale with exceptional color depth and clarity, bringing the vivid reds, magentas, and gold tones of the imagery to life. The high resolution LED surfaces allow the movement of the plants to unfold with striking detail, immersing viewers in the lush environments created through West’s time lapse process.

The technological capabilities of SV Studios make it an ideal setting for this exhibition. Expansive LED screens and precise control of light and color allow the work to surround the viewer, creating an immersive environment where the slow movements of leaves, stems, and blossoms can be experienced on a monumental scale.

VIP Opening

The opening night of Oasis at SV Studios will set the tone for a stylish evening in Los Angeles as guests gather to experience the immersive installation. Tequila and mezcal will be served throughout the evening, adding to the relaxed social atmosphere as guests take in the glowing desert garden environment and spend time with friends and colleagues.

This vibrant environment will blend art, nightlife, and social culture, drawing artists, collectors, creatives, and influencers from across Los Angeles. The opening is designed to feel both sophisticated and celebratory, transforming the premiere of OASIS into a memorable gathering around art, conversation, and shared experience.

Special attention will be given to the details of the evening to create an atmosphere that feels both exciting and refined. Floral arrangements throughout the space will be designed to echo the plants featured in the artwork, with sculptural agave, cacti, and garden flowers incorporated into the tables and gathering areas. These botanical details will extend the visual language of the installation into the event itself, allowing the physical environment to feel connected to the moonlit garden on screen.

As guests move through SV Studios, the glowing desert garden installation, sculptural floral arrangements, and stylish crowd will provide countless moments that invite photography and social media sharing. Together these elements will transform the evening into a memorable cultural event that extends beyond the space, with images and videos circulating online and amplifying the excitement around Oasis and its debut in Los Angeles.

At its core, OASIS centers on the idea of the garden as a universal space. Across cultures and cities, gardens represent places of care, beauty, and quiet reflection created through the simple act of bringing plants together. Whether in expansive parks, shared courtyards, or small home gardens, these spaces offer moments of calm within the rhythm of urban life. Through a luminous desert garden environment, West transforms the familiar language of the garden into an immersive installation that invites viewers to slow down, observe nature, and gather together.

In keeping with this spirit, the exhibition at SV Studios will also include free public programming so that a broad Los Angeles audience can experience the work. The presentation reflects the artist’s interest in creating accessible cultural moments within the city where she lives and works. By combining a striking visual environment with opportunities for public access and social gathering, OASIS aims to create a memorable experience centered on art, nature, and shared space.
