Each flower arrives in this world with its own unique, vibrant coloration. Butterflies emerge from their cocoons to showcase delicate patterns in a rainbow of hues. Fiery sunsets transform the sky and give way to the cool blue light of the moon.
Through the power of colored light, Los Angeles based artist Maggie West celebrates nature’s chromatic range while re-coloring each natural specimen with a new, vibrant hue. Through her photographic lens, she creates images that both capture the features of the plants while bathing them in a surreal light; thereby blurring the line between fantasy and documentation.
During the pandemic, West became fascinated with gardening. The time spent at home during quarantine opened her eyes to the beauty of observing the natural growth process of plants.
The artist began bringing flowers from her garden into the studio and capturing their growth in one minute intervals with colored strobe lights. This groundbreaking animation process extended beyond the boundaries of traditional time-lapse photography and allows West to capture the floral bloom process with intricate detail and surreal color treatments that have never been seen before.
In 2021, West premiered her first time lapse videos in a series of digital landscapes she called Eternal Garden.
Eternal Garden premiered a two day immersive pop up experience presented in partnership with Vellum Gallery at SV studios in Los Angeles.
For 2023, West’s vivid time lapse videos will be shown in a groundbreaking new format in one of Las Vegas’s most stunning locations.
Working in partnership with the team at Bellagio, West will create a new series of floral videos and project them onto the surface of the fountains outside. This innovative combination of projection mapping technology with one of Las Vegas’ most iconic locations will spark new interest in the location and create lasting memories for visitors.
